March of Dimes

It’s the March of Dimes’ mission to lead the fight for the health of all moms and babies. Their goals are to end the preventable maternal health risks and deaths, end preventable preterm birth and infant death, and close the health equity gap

4Kira4Moms

At 4Kira4Moms, they are on a mission to advocate for improved maternal health policies and regulations, to educate the public about the impact of maternal mortality in communities, provide peer support to victims’ families, and promote the idea that maternal mortality should be viewed, and discussed as a human rights issue.

Experience Camps

Experience Camps is an award-winning national nonprofit that transforms the lives of grieving children through summer camp programs and innovative, year-round initiatives. Through compassion, connection, and play, we allow grieving children to embody a life full of hope and possibility. By amplifying their voices, we are creating a more grief-sensitive culture.

Every Mother Counts

Founded by Christy Turlington, their mission is to ensure that the maternal health journey before, during, and after childbirth is safe, respectful, and equitable for everyone, everywhere.
  • How You Can Help Yourself If Expecting:
  • Expectant parents can take proactive steps to avoid similar situations:
  • 1. Advocate for access to credentialed doulas, midwives, and comprehensive care during labor and postpartum.
  • 2. Research hospitals’ maternal mortality rates and ensure they are below the national median.
  • 3. Ensure that healthcare providers are equipped to handle complications, with necessary protocols in place.
  • Ask questions during hospital and OB-GYN interviews such as the following:
  • 1. What do you do to reduce birth trauma for your patients?
  • 2. Do you have access to the Jada device in your operating room?
  • 3. Are staff meetings or huddles implemented with all providers of the care team to assess and review each patient and their risk factors?
  • 4. Is everyone (hospital staff and providers) made aware of the protocols in place that address the main preventable causes of complications and death during pregnancy and childbirth?
  • 5. Is there an equipped Postpartum Hemorrhage Cart always present at time of delivery, in addition to a crash cart?
  • 6. Does your hospital have access to an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine (this is not essential but your only chance of survival in certain rare instances)
  • 7. How often do you have emergency drills with the hospital staff?
  • 8. How do you keep up-to-date on the latest evidence?
  • 9. Who is the decision maker or has the final say in the delivery room? What is the level of attending supervision, if at a teaching hospital? Confirm that the Attending Physician is scrubbed in.
  • 10. What is “informed consent” and is it important to you? If so, why?
  • 11. What are your hospital’s doctor-to-patient and labor staff-to-patient ratios in OB?
  • 12. At this hospital, am I able to use a Doula and/or Midwife for additional support? Based on what you know of this hospital, do you recommend it?
